One Room Challenge [Modern Rustic Home Office] Week 6 Final Reveal

It's week six, the end of the One Room Challenge.  We battled other projects taking over, chosen items being out of stock, and four sick kids but I'm so excited to be able to say, we made it!  Well mostly.  Here is all we accomplished!

First of all, thank you to Linda of Calling it Home for hosting this great event!  I am so glad that we finally jumped in and did this.  I am the type of person that needs a deadline to finish a project in a timely way.  Otherwise I get it to about 85% and then something else catches my attention or I get a new idea and the old project is left.

I set out to mix in all of things my husband likes; sports, fishing, hobbies, slot cars.  I think in the end we came up with a really good mix of everything.

So to remind you of where we started, here is a before shot of my husband's home office.  You can see more before's here at Week 1

And now to the good stuff!  We've come a long way.  Here are the after's:

That's a convertible sofa, what we called a futon back in our college and single life days.  I found it here on Amazon.  I'm really happy with it and also happy to have another spot for guests to sleep.

I scored that awesome kilim rug from ecarpetgallery.com on clearance!

The end tables and coffee table were all thrifted for $60 total.  The table lamps are from Tuesday Morning.  The chandelier was provided courtesy of Lamps Plus. Big thanks to Lamps Plus!

The blue velvet throw pillows are from World Market.  Literally everything else on the tables and shelves are things I already had from thrifting and shopping the house.

My husband built this amazing book case for me out of 2x10s.  It was a pretty simple project, but he's awesome like that. His tip is to use a lesser grade of wood to save money, but pick them carefully and run them through a table saw to clean up all the edges before you build it. As a result this entire bookcase only cost us about $40.

I found this leather chair while thrifting last week too. I thought this fun pillow from Homegoods made the formal chair a little more casual.

See that super cool basketball goal end table?  Husband strikes again!  This time with his own idea and creativity.  A while back he found two of these NBA breakaway basketball goals on Craigslist for super cheap.  He used one as an actual basketball goal outside and this one was left.  Because it's so heavy, it required quite the base.

Do you know Vernor's soda from Michigan?  It's one of our favorites.  I found this vintage Vernor's bottle in a resale shop a few months ago and I knew it would be perfect for my husband's office, so I've been saving it until I could use it.

Here is his collection of vintage slot cars from his Dad. And his grandfather carved that head figure in the background back in 1940.  It's important to us to have meaningful pieces around us.

And there's my Craigslist freebie desk.  You can read all about the makeover of this beast here Mid Century Desk Makeover.

Since we didn't put in a ceiling fan, I figured he would need some air movement from somewhere, so I found this cool retro inspired fan at Homegoods.  The curtains and plant are from Tuesday Morning.  Vintage address book was my Granddaddy's.

These newspaper front page reprints from the Detroit Free Press have been with us for years.  My husband delivered the papers as a teenager and he picked some of his favorite Detroit sports highlights to frame.  They've been in a closet since we moved so I'm glad they have a spot now.

And now to one of the biggest pieces of this project.  We built this framed box on hinges to store my husband's slot car set.  It was his dad's and he recently gave it to us.  I painted this painting as a special gift to my husband.  It's a salt marsh at dawn scene because that's where he likes to fish.  That's him in his yellow kayak.

And when it's folded down, the fun begins!  This is just a quick, simple layout for the display.  The actual layout will be more intricate.  Because the couch is convertible, when it lays down flat the arms are the perfect height to support the slot car track table.

So there we are!  I'm so happy we actually accomplished this project.  I have to give a great big shoutout of thanks to my wonderful husband with all of his building skills and my parents for helping us make us so much progress last weekend. And my brother for helping my husband carry all of the heavy things up two flights of stairs!  And thank you all so much for joining us on this little adventure!  Now make sure you check out all of the other amazing room transformations on Calling It Home.
